Getting your Thailand medical visa right is not complicated, but it is unforgiving. One missing document, one incorrect date, or one signature in the wrong place can delay your application by days and push back your treatment. When you’re traveling for something as important as medical care, that delay is the last thing you need.
This guide lists every document required for a Thailand medical visa application from Bangladesh, explains what each document needs to show, and covers what’s different for accompanying family members and air ambulance cases. It’s drawn from official Royal Thai Embassy Dhaka requirements as updated for 2026.
Which Visa Do You Need?
Bangladesh is not on Thailand’s visa exemption list, which means Bangladeshi nationals must apply for a visa before traveling. For medical treatment, there are two visa options:
Non-Immigrant Visa Category “O” (Medical): This is the correct visa for patients traveling for treatment at a hospital in Thailand. It allows a stay of 60 to 90 days per entry, extendable inside Thailand with a doctor’s letter confirming ongoing treatment. The passport must have at least 18 months of remaining validity for this category.
Tourist Visa “TR”: Some patients coming for short visits such as a health check-up or a single outpatient consultation use a tourist visa. It permits a 60-day stay, extendable by 30 days inside Thailand at a local immigration office for 1,900 THB. The passport needs at least 6 months of remaining validity.
For treatment involving surgery, chemotherapy cycles, or any stay longer than a few days, the Non-Immigrant O medical visa is the more appropriate choice. If you’re unsure which applies to your case, Thai Medi Xpress advises you based on your specific treatment plan. Our Thailand Medical Visa Page has additional guidance on this question.
Where to Apply
Visa applications for Bangladeshi nationals are processed through two channels:
VFS Global Visa Application Centers: Most applications in Bangladesh now go through VFS Global. Centers are located in Dhaka and Chittagong. VFS Global collects documents, takes biometrics, and forwards applications to the Royal Thai Embassy.
Royal Thai Embassy, Dhaka: Located at 18 and 20 Madani Avenue, Baridhara, Dhaka-1212. Office hours are Sunday to Thursday, 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, except public holidays. Phone: 02-222291248.
Processing time from Dhaka is a minimum of 5 working days including the date of submission. From Chittagong, it’s a minimum of 7 working days. Apply at least 2 full weeks before your planned travel date to allow for any document queries.
Full Document Checklist: Patient Applying for Non-Immigrant O Medical Visa
Organize all documents in this order before submission. Label each section clearly.
1. Passport
Your passport must:
- Be valid for at least 18 months from the date of your visa application (for Non-Immigrant O; 6 months minimum for Tourist Visa)
- Have at least 2 blank pages to accommodate the visa sticker and immigration stamps
- Include a photocopy of the passport information page, the most recent Thai visa page (if any), and any renewal pages
2. Photographs
- Two colour passport-sized photographs, 3.5 x 4.5 cm
- Taken against a plain white background
- Within the past 6 months
- No hats, head coverings (except for religious reasons), or tinted glasses
- Face clearly visible with a neutral expression
3. Completed Visa Application Form
- The TM.87 form for Non-Immigrant Visa O (available from the Royal Thai Embassy website or VFS Global center)
- Must be fully completed, with no blank fields
- Signed by the applicant
- Contact numbers provided must be accessible at all times during processing
4. Hospital Appointment or Admission Letter (Most Critical Document)
This is the most important document in the entire application. Without it, a medical visa application cannot proceed.
The letter must:
- Come from the treating hospital in Thailand on official letterhead
- State your appointment or admission date
- Name the attending doctor or department
- State the estimated treatment duration
- Include the names of any accompanying persons traveling with you
For Bumrungrad International Hospital patients, Thai Medi Xpress requests this letter directly from the Bumrungrad international patient office as part of our coordination service. You do not need to contact Bumrungrad yourself for this document. It is typically ready within 3 to 5 working days of your appointment being confirmed.
5. Medical Certificate from a Bangladeshi Doctor
- An official medical certificate or letter from your current treating doctor in Bangladesh
- Must describe your current health condition and the purpose of visiting Thailand for treatment
- Must be signed and stamped by the doctor with their name, designation, and medical registration details
- Should state that the treatment you require is available at the Thai hospital you’re attending
6. Medical Reports
- Relevant diagnostic reports supporting your condition and the need for treatment
- This includes blood tests, imaging reports (CT, MRI, X-ray), biopsy results, or any specialist letters
- These don’t need to be submitted in a specific format, but they should be current (ideally within the past 3 months)
7. Proof of Financial Sufficiency
The Thai Embassy requires evidence that you can cover your treatment and living costs in Thailand.
- Bank statements for the past 6 months showing regular transactions
- A bank solvency certificate confirming your balance
- Minimum required: 20,000 Thai Baht per person (approximately BDT 60,000) or 40,000 Thai Baht per family (approximately BDT 120,000)
- Only original bank statements and solvency letters are accepted, not photocopies
If a family member is sponsoring the patient’s trip, include:
- A sponsorship letter from the sponsor
- The sponsor’s bank statement and solvency certificate
- Proof of relationship (marriage certificate, birth certificate, or equivalent)
8. Proof of Occupation or Status (Ties to Bangladesh)
The embassy verifies that you have genuine reasons to return to Bangladesh after treatment. Provide whichever applies:
- Employed: Salary certificate or NOC (No Objection Certificate) from employer, with leave approval
- Business owner: Original trade license, translated into English and notarized if in Bengali
- Student: Student ID or letter from educational institution
- Retired: Pension documents or retirement certificate
- Unemployed or homemaker: An explanation letter is acceptable; be honest rather than submit false documents
9. Accommodation Confirmation in Bangkok
- Hotel booking confirmation showing your name and dates of stay
- Or a letter from the hospital if you’ll be staying in hospital accommodation
- Or a letter of invitation from a Bangladesh national residing in Bangkok with their address and contact details
10. Return Flight Booking Confirmation
- A confirmed or provisional return flight booking showing your name, travel dates, and destination
- You don’t always need a fully paid ticket, but a confirmed booking reference is required
- If your return date is uncertain due to treatment duration, use a flexible or refundable booking
11. Travel or Health Insurance
Travel insurance covering medical expenses during your stay in Thailand is strongly recommended. Some visa categories and airlines require it. A policy covering your treatment period and emergency medical evacuation is appropriate.
Documents for Accompanying Family Members
Up to three accompanying family members can travel with a patient on a medical visa. Each companion applies separately but submits a linked application.
Each accompanying person needs:
- Their own valid passport (6 months minimum validity)
- Two photographs (same specifications as above)
- Completed visa application form
- Bank statement and solvency letter, or a sponsorship letter from the patient with the patient’s bank documents
- Proof of relationship to the patient: marriage certificate for a spouse, birth certificate for children or parents
- A copy of the patient’s hospital appointment letter showing their name as an accompanying person
The hospital letter from Bumrungrad must name all accompanying persons. When you confirm your appointment through Thai Medi Xpress, inform us of all family members traveling with you so we can include their names in the Bumrungrad letter.
Additional Documents for Air Ambulance Cases
If the patient cannot travel by commercial flight and requires an emergency air ambulance transfer, the visa documentation requirements are different and handled through an expedited channel.
For air ambulance cases, the following additional documents are required on top of the standard set:
- Recent case summary of the patient’s medical condition issued by the treating hospital in Bangladesh
- Certificate of acceptance or invitation letter from the receiving hospital in Thailand (Bumrungrad in this case) confirming the patient’s condition, the medical necessity of transfer, and the names and relationships of accompanying persons
- Air ambulance booking confirmation letter including the med letter and action plan from the air ambulance provider
ThaiMediXpress coordinates all of these documents in parallel when an air ambulance transfer is being arranged. Because we are the official Bumrungrad Bangladesh referral partner, we have a direct channel to obtain the Bumrungrad acceptance letter urgently. The Thai Embassy gives priority processing to genuine emergency medical evacuation cases.
For air ambulance inquiries, call our emergency line at 01844047060 (Dhaka) or 01844 047063 (Chittagong). Full details on our air ambulance coordination service are on our Emergency Air Ambulance Page, the Dhaka Air Ambulance Page, and the Chittagong Air Ambulance Page.
Common Mistakes That Delay Applications
These are the most frequently seen problems that cause visa delays for Bangladeshi medical patients:
Incomplete application form: Every field must be filled in. Blank fields trigger a follow-up request that adds days to the process.
Bank statement and solvency letter copies instead of originals: The embassy specifically requires original documents for financial proof. Photocopies are rejected.
Hospital letter missing accompanying person names: If family members are traveling with the patient but their names aren’t in the hospital letter, their visas may not be approved. Inform ThaiMediXpress of all traveling companions before we request the Bumrungrad letter.
Appointment letter without a duration: The hospital letter must state the estimated treatment duration, not just the appointment date. Bumrungrad’s international patient letters include this automatically.
Passport validity not meeting the 18-month requirement: The Non-Immigrant O visa requires 18 months of remaining validity, not 6 months like most other visas. Many patients don’t realize this and have their application rejected. Renew your passport before applying if needed.
Photographs not meeting specifications: The background must be plain white, not light blue or off-white. The photo must have been taken within the past 6 months.
Applying too close to the travel date: Minimum processing is 5 working days from Dhaka. Add 2 to 3 days buffer for any document query. Apply at least 12 working days before your travel date to be safe.
How Thai Medi Xpress Helps with Visa Processing
Applying for a medical visa on your own is entirely possible if you have the time and the right documents. However, two specific parts of the application are significantly easier when you go through ThaiMediXpress.
The first is the Bumrungrad hospital appointment letter. Bumrungrad only issues this letter after a confirmed appointment is booked through the official coordination channel. Patients who contact Bumrungrad directly without going through the official Bangladesh referral process sometimes wait longer or receive less detailed letters. ThaiMediXpress requests this letter as standard, ensuring it includes all required information: doctor name, department, appointment date, treatment duration, and all accompanying persons.
The second is case-specific guidance on which visa category applies. A health check-up patient and a cardiac surgery patient have different appropriate visa types. We advise on this based on your specific treatment plan so you don’t apply for the wrong category. Contact Our Dhaka office at 01844047060 or our Chittagong office at 01844 047063 to start the process. WhatsApp works at both numbers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I travel to Thailand on a tourist visa for medical treatment?
For short visits such as a diagnostic check-up or a single outpatient consultation, a tourist visa is typically sufficient. For any treatment involving surgery, hospital admission, or multiple treatment cycles, the Non-Immigrant O medical visa is more appropriate. The right choice depends on your specific treatment plan. Our team advises on this for free.
How long can I stay in Thailand on a Non-Immigrant O medical visa?
The initial stay permitted is 60 to 90 days per entry. If your treatment requires a longer stay, your treating doctor at Bumrungrad provides a letter confirming ongoing medical necessity, and you apply for an extension at a local Thai immigration office. Extensions for medical patients are reviewed sympathetically and are generally approved when the hospital letter is clear.
Can I submit a provisional flight booking rather than a confirmed ticket?
Yes. A confirmed booking reference is required, but the ticket doesn’t need to be fully paid. Use a flexible or refundable booking if your return date is uncertain.
What happens if my documents are in Bengali?
Documents in Bengali must be translated into English and the translation should be notarized. This typically applies to trade licenses for business owners, birth certificates for child patients, and similar documents. Medical reports in Bengali should be accompanied by English translations from your doctor.
How many family members can accompany a patient?
Up to three immediate family members can accompany a patient. Each needs their own visa application with proof of relationship and their names included in the hospital appointment letter.
What if I need to extend my stay inside Thailand because treatment takes longer than expected?
Your treating doctor at Bumrungrad provides a letter confirming ongoing medical necessity. You take this letter to the nearest Thai immigration office and apply for an extension. The standard extension fee is 1,900 THB. Bumrungrad’s international patient team assists with this process for admitted patients. Do not overstay your visa under any circumstances; overstaying results in fines of 500 THB per day and can affect future visa applications.
Does ThaiMediXpress charge for visa support?
No. All visa coordination support from Thai Medi Xpress is completely free of charge. We assist with obtaining the Bumrungrad hospital letter, advising on which visa category to apply for, and guiding you through the document checklist. The visa fee itself is paid directly to VFS Global or the Royal Thai Embassy.
